December 2014: Polar Express

Family Home Evening before Christmas, we decided to surprise the kids with a "mock" Polar Express. We got the kids all ready for bed a little early and then instead of going to bed after scripture and prayer, we gave them small tickets and told them the Polar Express was waiting outside. We had hot chocolate and popcorn waiting at their seats. Chris even punched their tickets before we started. We drove around and looked at the Christmas lights (seems as though they get fewer and fewer every year....) and discussed why we put lights up at Christmas time. We then ended at the mall where we went in and had a visit with Santa Claus. We weren't allowed to take pictures with our own cameras, so this was taken just outside Santa's "throne". They were SO cute. I wished I would have just flipped my camera to film on my hip while we were in there because it was magical. Miles and Lydia both went right up to him and visited and chatted for a good long while. There was no one else there and so we could stay and let them talk for quite some time. It was perfect. They explained what they wanted; Miles, a farm and Lydia, a new art set (in which she proceeded to tell him very specific details about how she wanted the set up). Faith wouldn't get too close, but she liked saying hi, safely in mommy's arms and from a good distance away. They loved the candy cane and we got back on the Polar Express to go home. Chris finished punching their tickets when we got home. I brought the hole punch for him to just punch a hole in each ticket, but he went above and beyond! He actually was able to punch words into those tiny tickets! I was impressed.
